There is a thriving pilot gig club in Porthleven. Gigs are elegant 32 foot traditional Cornish wooden clinker built working boats, some of which are over 100 years old, with six single-oar rowing positions and a cox. They are traditionally made of Cornish narrow leaf elm. The yellow and white St Elvan is named after the original name for Porthleven (shown here racing on the Isles of Scilly) is the Porthlevens club new gig. It was built in 2002 by master craftsman Ralph Bird of Devoran. The Cornish Pilot Gig Association is the governing body of the sport. Click here to see a plan.

Walking: A two and a half hour walk from Rinsey Cove. You go past Wheal Prosper, used for filming a Poldark sequel, and further round is Trewavas Mine perched precariously on the cliff edge but a breathtaking sight.Walk along the South Cornwall Coastal Footpath, from Porthleven to Gunwalloe Church Cove which is an invigorating 5 miles. It takes you past the spectacular Pedngwinian [grid ref. 653210] - a cove shaped like the claws of a crab - as you pass it you feel like the sea is all around you. Or try the more adventurous Porthleven to Penzance. Or from the village to the Lizard.

They have started to put into place a youth structure that will serve the Club for the future. Junior training nights are on Tuesday evening, with Senior training on Thursday.
